Eight powerhouse HBCU bands unite for a one-day arena showcase celebrating culture, community & musical excellence
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - eMusicWire -- Charlotte, NC – On Saturday, January 24, 2026, the BIG HBCU Southern Classic Battle of the Bands returns to Charlotte, NC, bringing together eight of the nation's premier Historically Black College and University marching bands for one explosive night of sound and showmanship. The highly anticipated event—expected to draw more than 15,000 fans — marking the official return of one of the region's most celebrated cultural traditions. The event will take place at the Bojangles Coliseum, 2700 E Independence Blvd.
This year's Classic unites eight elite HBCU marching bands as they take the field in a high-energy showcase competing for the ultimate bragging rights: Best Band in the World. Fans can expect electrifying, halftime-style performances that highlight the artistry, athleticism, and legacy of HBCU band culture.

Full Day of Celebration: The BIG HBCU FANFEST
Festivities begin with the BIG HBCU FANFEST from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM, transforming the Bojangles Coliseum campus into a vibrant cultural celebration featuring food trucks, vendors, live music, youth performers, giveaways, and interactive experiences inspired by HBCU spirit and tradition. Doors to the coliseum open at 4:00 PM, and the Battle begins promptly at 6:00 PM.
Welcome remarks will be delivered by distinguished local officials, community leaders, and HBCU representatives. The Southern Classic aims to spotlight the cultural, educational, and economic impact of HBCUs while offering students, families, and alumni a dynamic platform to experience the power and pride of HBCU traditions firsthand.
