SACRAMENTO, Calif. - eMusicWire -- Bennett Awards is honored to have once again partnered with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this time crafting unique awards for the 2025 Scientific and Technical Awards. Following last year's collaboration on the Student Academy Awards, the Academy entrusted Bennett Awards with designing two new awards that balance innovation with tradition.
Originally scheduled for February but postponed due to the January wildfires in Los Angeles, the ceremony took place April 29 at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Hollywood. The Academy requested a refreshed design direction for this year's awards—modern, distinct, yet respectful of the iconic Oscar® statuette that defines the Academy's visual identity.
Bennett Awards responded with two custom designs: a reimagined Scientific and Engineering Award presented as a large, modern acrylic plaque featuring brass edging and an embossed Oscar silhouette, and a sleek Technical Achievement Award fashioned as a compact gold-plated statuette housed in a clear acrylic presentation box. While visually different, both awards shared cohesive design elements that reflected the Academy's evolving aesthetic.

"We provided multiple prototypes and material samples to ensure every detail aligned with their vision," said Karen McCrea, the Bennett Awards project manager. "The Academy team appreciated the balance we struck between homage and originality."
In addition, the only Oscar statuette of the evening—the Academy Award of Merit—was awarded collectively to those who developed and supported film captioning technologies. The award, accepted by Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin, will reside at the Academy Museum as a tribute to accessibility in cinema.
Hosted by actor Diego Luna, the ceremony recognized pioneering contributions in film technology—from fire stunt safety innovations and camera stabilization to breakthroughs in post-production sound and image processing. Honorees included Disney, Sound Radix, and the Action Factory Hydrogels.
"The Academy challenged us to elevate the identity of these prestigious awards," said McCrea. "Their team even joked that some of our staff deserve an award ourselves—which, coming from the Academy, is a pretty great compliment."
