HONK! FESTIVAL 16th Annual Fest of Activist Street Bands. Held in person, outdoors rain or shine, on Sat., Oct. 9, 2021. Over 15 locally-based street bands contributing their brash bold sounds to highlight specific local grassroots efforts.

BOSTON - eMusicWire -- HONK! 2021. Now to be held for one-day only, specifically on October 9th, the Saturday of Indigenous Peoples Day Weekend.

In deference to the most recent Covid concerns, HONK! 2021 has again adjusted its plans for this year. The participating HONK! bands, all hailing from nearby locations, will be performing throughout the Boston-area, but only on that Saturday. Up-to-date health precautions will be followed, depending on what is required for safe outdoor gatherings on that very day.

HONK! 2021 shall maintain a very different and necessary approach this year, an approach far from the large street festivals that have been celebrated annually in the before times spanning 2006-2019. For example, HONK! will not be holding its usual multi-band Davis Square-to-Harvard Square parade. But let it be known, in spite of the smaller look of HONK! 2021 due to this year's necessary adjustments, the hyper local grassroots plans for this year will have a very mighty feel.

For this is the year of the distilled decentralized festival, where a wide variety of on-site events will take place in neighborhoods throughout greater Boston. In partnership with social justice, community and arts organizations, 15+ local HONK! bands will play throughout HONK! Saturday, in parks, squares and on street corners in Somerville, Cambridge, East Boston, South End and Roxbury. These unplugged street bands will play to support events designed by their neighborhood partner organizations, who are based right where they live and work, with the purpose of raising awareness about the good grassroots work being done right there.

This year, HONK!'s intention is to reach communities that have not been able to participate in the past, for example Nubian Square in Roxbury, while also retaining HONK!'s historic connection to Davis Square in Somerville. The plan is to delve deep into various neighborhoods that constitute the hyperlocal communities that make up Boston and its adjacent cities.
