Research by Bisnar Chase released a new report ranking the safest and most dangerous cities for bicycling in the United States. The study analyzed miles of bike lanes, trail networks, traffic patterns, and cycling education efforts to produce safety scores for large U.S. cities.
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - eMusicWire -- Virginia, North Carolina and Washington cities took the top spots as the nation's premier cycling-friendly metro areas. These cities have made major investments in infrastructure like protected bike lanes and trails, implemented traffic-calming measures, and promoted safe cycling through public service campaigns. Their long-term commitment has paid dividends in the form of lower accident rates and rising bike commuter numbers.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama cities fared poorly in the bicycle safety assessment. Narrow streets, lack of designated cycling space, and high-speed traffic contribute to heightened risk for cyclists navigating these cities. The study authors recommend infrastructure improvements, revised road design standards, and greater public education on sharing the road safely with bikes.
