"Third Thursdays" jazz series continues with former Ornette Coleman collaborator Dave Bryant (host, keyboards), in a reunion of Bryant's '80's band Shock Exchange w/John Turner (bass) and Chris Bowman (drums), joined by George Garzone (saxophones).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - eMusicWire -- Shock Exchange. An avant-garde/jazz-rock band, formed back in the 80's by keyboardist Dave Bryant, bassist John Turner, and drummer Chris Bowman. On the debut of their self-titled album in 1988, the Boston Phoenix's review declared "Shock Exchange may be the most original improvising band working locally," adding "this trio, built around the keyboards of David Bryant, has actually captured the feeling of Ornette Coleman's notoriously keyboardless harmolodic music." As Ornette Coleman, who at the time was Bryant's teacher/mentor, concluded in his copious liner notes for the band's first album, each player's objective was to always be the following: "David, John, Chris. To play your best. Not as a contest for success. But a goal for some happy souls."
Over time, Bryant, Turner, and Bowman went on to explore other performance opportunities. But their connection runs deep and Shock Exchange has continued to perform and record over the years. Saxophonist George Garzone, who teamed up with Shock Exchange for the band's second recording, The Eternal Hang, will be joining the band in December, adding his potent voice to the mix. Don't miss this one—as the Boston Globe said of their debut, "the Boston-based trio has assimilated Ornette Coleman's theories into a powerful, challenging music. And it swings." Come join this rare and long-awaited reunion and add a jolt to your holidays!

The "Third Thursdays with Dave Bryant and Friends" harmolodic jazz series began this past April, with the overall goal of showcasing a diverse range of Boston-area musical artists, as well as Dave's fellow Ornette Coleman sidemen. The series provides a venue for the musicians to perform their work in an acoustically sympathetic performance space with professional video and sound recording to document the event. In addition, the Coleman collaborators are interviewed about the experience for presentation in a podcast. All "Third Thursdays" sessions are held monthly at the Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church, located a short walking distance from Harvard Square. Audience seating capacity will abide by whatever health and safety protocols are in place on any given month. The "Third Thursdays" harmolodic jazz series is funded in part by the Appalachian Springs Foundation (ASF), a private foundation located in Charleston, WV. As a nonprofit arts and educational organization, ASF has supported dance, film, music, and educational projects. Many of the "Third Thursdays" concert and interview videos that have been recorded since April 2022 can be found at dbryantmusic.com/third-thursdays.
