PORTLAND, Maine - eMusicWire -- Richard Boyd Art Gallery, a beloved and award-winning fine art gallery located in the heart of Peaks Island's business district, will close its doors in September, marking the end of an era. A cornerstone of the Peaks Island arts community, it was dedicated to exhibiting original works of art.
Founded by the late Richard F. Boyd, a creative soul, accomplished potter, and retired APRN CRNA, and his wife Pamela Williamson the gallery has long been celebrated for showcasing a diverse array of original visual art. Since its inception, Richard Boyd Art Gallery has been a welcoming place where the transformative power of art was felt by all who crossed its threshold.
Rick Boyd's creative journey began in the 1970s after relocating from Pennsylvania to Maine, where he worked at Maine Medical Center. Seeking a space to pursue his passion for pottery, Rick became an apprentice of Larry Adlerstein's at Portland Pottery on Exchange Street, and alongside friend Stu Kestenbaum, opened Second Story Pottery in Portland's Old Port. In 1976, he settled on Peaks Island, establishing Peaks Island Pottery in his home and, later, having a two-story building constructed on the front of his property that would eventually house the gallery.

Pam and Rick established the gallery as a space defined by creativity, inclusivity, and artistic excellence creating an award-winning fine art gallery known for its commitment to visual art. As Rick's health declined, Pam operated the gallery steadfast in their commitment to fostering inspiration and hope through visual art.
Rick's passing on November 20, 2024 was a profound loss. In honor of her husband, Pam continued to operate the gallery until a near accident while installing an exhibition, made her realize she could no longer safely maintain the gallery or building.
"After many sleepless nights and careful consideration, I made the difficult decision to sell the commercial parcel of land which includes the gallery building. I will miss working with and representing a distinguished group of artists from across the United States, many have been with me since the beginning, and I consider them members of my family. I have no idea who will purchase the property or what commercial business will occupy the space, but I will welcome them to the neighborhood with open arms and wish them many years of happiness in their new location."

While the future of the commercial property and building remains uncertain, the legacy of Richard Boyd Art Gallery—its impact on artists, visitors, and the community—will continue to inspire generations to come.
