The Illinois Reporter manager Jeff Groot posted that someone is using their ™names, ©logos, and ©images to post malicious content and spam with click bait, pointing at a competitor's page. On social media they are setting up spoofed and cloned sites, hundreds of fake profiles, and leaving fraudulent reviews, attempting to access company sites, and wreak havoc like posting that Illinois Reporters companies are closed and other defamatory and extortion posts. Groot feel this is being done by a competitor and those who are trying to silence their stories regarding extremism impacting local government bodies.

The company has stated that since the reporting of espionage to law enforcement, they are now being subjected to releases of personal and private information about their journalists, extortion, false light, defamation, and retaliation to a victim.
