NEW YORK - eMusicWire -- Urgent Matter, an independent art news publication run by a single reporter, has published more than 860 articles since its launch in October 2025.
Journalist Adam Schrader founded the New York-based publication. He reports and edits it alone. It covers lawsuits, museum governance, labor disputes, the art market and cultural heritage policy.
Much of the reporting stems from court records and public records requests. This week, NASA emails provided to Urgent Matter showed the agency's security office had shut down a space science archive said to be down for "maintenance." The block lasted at least six months.
Other records-based stories covered the National Endowment for the Arts and the University of North Texas' handling of an anti-ICE art exhibition. Urgent Matter posts the underlying court filings and FOIA releases alongside its stories for paid members.
Texts obtained from UNT showed university leaders worried about "barking from Austin" over the exhibition by artist Victor "Marka27" Quiñonez. NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday credited Urgent Matter's records reporting in a July segment on the show.

A federal records request to Interpol Washington produced a January story on cultural property inquiries the agency coordinated in 2025 involving U.S. auction houses.
A request to New College of Florida for records on artwork removals came back without any records. Jamie Miller, the college's vice president of communications, told Urgent Matter it was "trying to create a story that doesn't exist."
Urgent Matter has also used FOIA to obtain National Labor Relations Board files on cases brought by museum workers, including at the Denver Art Museum and the Toledo Museum of Art.
Over its first year, the publication built five running trackers: a lawsuit database, a global art crime database, an art restitution tracker, a U.S. museum labor tracker and a global art fairs calendar.
In July 2026, it launched a digital print edition for paid subscribers. The edition carries artist profiles, obituaries, job listings, an art fairs calendar and a crossword built from the site's coverage.

Schrader also co-hosts Cold Take, a weekly art news podcast, with Colton Crews. Since October, the site has posted episode transcripts for paid members.
"I'm exhausted but people keep reading our stories, so gotta keep going," Schrader said.
Urgent Matter does not run sponsored content.
It licenses its stories to other newsrooms for low fees. Editors interested in licensing, or hiring Schrader as a freelancer, can contact adam@urgentmatter.press.
Readers can send tips securely to urgentmattertips@proton.me.
Before founding Urgent Matter, Schrader was a reporter at Artnet News and spent years covering crime and politics for New York City tabloids. He also writes for The Art Newspaper.
